WORLD’S GREATEST WONDER
WORLD’S GREATEST WONDER LOCATION
THE SNOW SWATHED ANGEL MOUNTAIN
Engelberg, which means Angel Mountain, is a historic Swiss Town and easily reachable Via road transfer from Swiss Airports, more conveniently from Zurich Airport. Engelberg in winter offers unforgettable experiences . Not many can have these unforgettable experiences bu t only those who are brave and determined by will to go for it . Spending a night in the Engelberg - Titlis Igloo village, half way up the towering Mount Titlis , will have a rewarding experience and it will remain etched in memory like the words inscribed on a rock !
When the day draws to a close in winter and the ski slopes above the Angel Mountain remain abandoned by the skiers, an uneasy feeling is bound to envelope those who have determined to spend the night for the first time in an Igloo Village. If seen from a distance, an Igloo – Dorf ( Dorf in German means Village ) will look like a snow –covered hillock. But once you are inside it, the giant sculptured igloo, divided into rooms and piled with sleeping bags and blankets, will exude a reassuring and incredible pleasant ambiance. The sleeping bag can withstand temperatures up to -40 c. The giant Igloo dome has number of rooms from family suits to more spacious and convenient ones. A family suit can sleep two adults and four children. In total, a Igloo Dome can accommodate 55 people.
The décor of the Igloo Dome has ice sculptures in niches along corridors, which lead around a main Chamber and off to the rooms. Those, who are strong can enjoy the outdoor Jacuzzi braving the chill mountain air. But one has to think twice before stepping out into the chilly mountain air at 1800m. above sea level. In Engelberg , several thousands of meters high and several degrees below freezing point, a Jacuzzi is a decadent indulgence meant for the brave to enjoy. Engelberg is an enchanting Swiss Resort too. As this location is very famous for alpine skiing people come here in large numbers, some for sight seeing and others with a desire to do the skiing . In brief, Engelberg is considered to be one of the finest off-piste skiing destinations in the Swiss Alps. Other activities involve e cross – country skiing, racing snow bikes close to the Igloo and simply walking in the mountains etc. Those who do not have a penchant to snake down the mountains slopes on ski runs can however prefer to soak in the freshness of the cool mountain air and engross in the captivating scenery around. If this is also not found likable, then get into the winter wear and take a cable car to the summit of Mount Titlis. Here you will find yourself in a spectacular snowscape on the highest suspension bridge in Europe. Over 3000m. high with a 500 m. drop , a stroll across the Titlis Cliff will offer you breathtaking views and that can be your once-in-a-life time experience and excitement ! Titlis Cliff Bridge is Europe’s highest suspension bridge over the Swiss Alps and also called as the world’s scariest bridge. This 100 m. long bridge overlooks the glacial gorge atop Mt. Titlis. One, who is desirous of strolling across this wonder bridge must pluck up enough courage to do same , as otherwise his desire can not materialize into a reality. So, the walk across Titlis Bridge, which remains suspended over Europe, is meant for the brave heart ! From atop, the visitors get a jaw – dropping view of the stunning Swiss Alps as far as 500 m. down. Even the most brave are seen clutching hard on to the side of the bridge while walking and apparently , with fear writ large on their face, looking down the abyss full of snow. The only and once-in-a-life time chance for this great thrill and in your case, this can be considered as achieving an impossible feat.
This world’s highest suspension bridge has also an engineering story to unfold - the story of hard work, dedication and commitment. It was built in December 2012 to mark the 100 year’s of the Engelberg – Gerschnialp Cableway. It was the most painstaking and tedious construction work ever undertaken. The materials needed for its construction were brought up at the site in cable cars, because the bridge was to remain suspended. Also, helicopters had to be pressed into service for transporting concrete and other construction materials. It was a herculean task to construct this huge suspension bridge at such a frightening height. Various construction companies had to be roped in at each stage of construction according to their specialization in the work. Huge amount of steel was used for assembly & construction. The entire suspension bridge measuring 1.5 m. wide at either end and slightly narrower in the middle was supported by steel cables. Imagine the degree of physical strain and stress, the construction team had undergone while constructing this huge bridge in suspended space in the face of the howling wind at 70 – 80 kmp. In order to prevent the structure from swaying in the wind, hard steel cables have been used underneath the bridge, in addition to using 16 m-long steel anchors to hold its bearings. Also, the sides of the bridge have steel frames that are welded together and held it in place with screws. SO, THIS HUGE SUSPENSION BRIDGE OVERLOOKING THE GLACIAL GORGE ATOP MOUNT TITLIS IS A CHALLENGING SPECIMEN OF THE ENGINEERING MARVEL FOR THE WORLD !
